Sweet or Savory BBQ Sauce

You guys! I had no freaking idea how quick and easy a simple BBQ sauce could be.  I have used a similar recipe for Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts.  I really really love how customizable this recipe can be.  I love to add different ingredients to change a bit of the flavor profile every time I make this.

This sauce is so good!  I use it for my Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts, BBQ weenies, burgers, chicken, and the list can go on.

Sweet Ingredients:

  • Ketchup – 1 Cup
  • Sugar – 1/2 Cup
  • Brown Sugar – 1 Cup
  • White Vinegar – 1 Tbsp
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Savory Options:

  • Red Pepper Flakes – 1 Tbls
  • Minced Onions (sauteed) – 1/4 cup
  • Minced Garlic (sauteed) – 2 cloves

Sweet Directions:

    1. Add Ketchup, Sugar, Brown Sugar, and vinegar to a bowl.
    2. Whisk until all ingredients are combined.
    3. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    4. Enjoy!

Optional – place sauce into a saucepan and bring to a slight simmer, stirring occasionally.

Savory Directions:

  1. Add minced onions, minced garlic, red pepper flakes and a little butter to a saucepan.
    • I prefer to cut my red pepper flakes into smaller pieces before adding to my pan.
    • If you really want to get fancy, toss the onions, garlic, and red pepper flakes into a food processor first.
  2. Sautee on low to medium heat until onions and garlic are opaque.
  3. Add Ketchup, Sugar, Brown Sugar, and vinegar to the saucepan.
  4. Whisk until all ingredients are combined.
  5. Simmer on low until all ingredients are incorporated.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Enjoy
